People have been asking me for years, how did you become so successful? Well there are a lot of things that I did and I defiantly made some mistakes along the way.
Today I’m going to share with you just two of the strategies I implemented that helped me achieve the phenomenal growth in all my businesses. The strategies you’ll learn here have helped my businesses double the profits every single year for past 5 years.
But before I do that, let me tell you what happened before that phenomenal growth because quite frankly it was my worst nightmare.
15 years ago I purchased my father’s business and began my lifelong dream to become an entrepreneur and have a great plumbing business, but the journey I was about to embark on would soon become my worst nightmare.
I was young and had no experience in building a great business. I made all the mistakes that a normal young businessman would make but on a much larger scale. You see I was impatient and grew the business way to fast.
I had no point of difference; and didn’t know how to charge for the work I was doing, we were in this big melting pot of bad businesses all competing for the same clients.
I had a huge amount of passion and drive but that’s not enough, you need strategies in business as well as Passion and Drive.
In the early days we were working 7 days a week to try and make ends meet.
I was out quoting and doing the jobs, dealing with customer complaints and trying to get paid for the work, my wife was in the office handling more customer complaints, invoicing and trying to balance my very badly kept cheque book.
All with a 6 week old baby in the office with her. After saving the business from certain bankruptcy, I set about doing something that no other plumbing business had ever attempted.
I set about building a business that did the complete opposite to every other plumbing business. You can probably imagine the fear I was going through, I couldn’t make it work following all the other businesses so how the hell was I going to make it doing something so radical.
Something inside me was telling me to do this I couldn’t ignore it. I interviewed family, friends, and clients to find out want they disliked about tradesmen coming into their homes. What I found out literally floored me.
We were making so many mistakes I’m surprised we didn’t go broke sooner.
Enough was enough we had to change. That’s when The Clean Plumber was born. I changed everything about the business, No longer were we going to arrive late, no longer were going to leave a mess behind we will treat you with respect and make sure you are completely satisfied with our work and cleanliness. Well, this worked a treat.
Business was booming and we were making tones of money.
So here are 2 strategies that I put in place that helped me create a Cash Generating Machine that gives my family the life that we have always dreamed of.
Well to start with I changed the way I was thinking. I took responsibility for the business and I galvanized everyone around me on one thing.
I gave the staff something that all businesses should have. I gave the staff a message. A message they could hang their hats on.
Let me explain.
The way I was running that business before was, I told you what to do and you did it or else. Well that obviously didn’t work. So I created a message, I created a message of ‘why we were in business’; I gave them a reason to come to work in the morning. I gave that message to anyone that would listen. I inspired them to believe in why we were in business.
Before that time I really hadn’t told them why we were doing what we were doing. I just made them do it.
I constantly hit home the message of The Clean Plumber. I held regular meetings with the staff and asked them to help me transform the business. I got them onboard for the ride. The more they helped me and the business the more I would help them.
They embraced the new me and the new comradery in the business.
I then set about taking this message to the clients; we had to turn these clients around and let them know we were there to help them.
Every piece of marketing or advertising that went out had our message on it. It permeated everything we did.
“If were late your plumbing’s free “and “we‘ll always clean up after the job. That’s
two simple messages that galvanized everyone in the business and everyone that did business with us.
You must have a message that your business, staff and your clients can hang their hats on. The message is always “Why Are You In Business”
People will buy your products or service if they know why you are in business.
For instance we don’t just fix your plumbing; we give you back your time, time you would normally wait for the serviceman to arrive. And we give you piece of mind that you have made the right choice in using our service.
They all want to feel safe and secure when doing business with you.
Find out what your message is, find out why you’re in business and then hammer it home to everyone.
One of the other things I did was to take massive ACTION.
I would implement anything and everything I could lay my hands on.
I became a ferrous reading and read hundreds of books. I listened to countless CDs. I implemented as much as I could.
A funny thing happens when you take massive action in your business, things actually start to change.
People around you will notice the change in you and in the business; they will want to be around you. You become a magnet, a very powerful magnet that attracts like things to you.
You start to lead people and people will want to follow. My strength and persistence is what gets me through very challenging times.
Another thing happens when you take massive action; you get momentum. The momentum in your business gets stronger and stronger. Things actually get a little easier because of momentum. It’s like getting a steam locomotive started. Huge amounts of energy are needed to get it rolling. Then momentum takes over and less energy is needed.
Same in your business, try to take massive action and get it moving.
I know that when you start to take action and implement things into your business you will get addicted to the momentum your business gets and the ride you go on will seem like you’re in Disneyland everyday of the week.
You will also see a massive change in the profits your business is making, and for me making more money allows me the chance to give my family the opportunity to experience this wonderful world we live in.
Remember. Get a message that your business and your clients can hang their hats on and take massive action all the time.
So, I want to leave you with one more thing.
You’ve decided to be a business owner for all your own reasons. Get out there and make the dream a reality, if your dream is to become the biggest company in your field then take some action towards it. If it’s to earn 1 million dollars a year, then do it. If it’s to have more time with your family then do that to. The only thing holding you back is you. And you’ll be the only one to blame if you don’t get your dream life.
